Werner D’Ansembourg Holds Off Yutaka Toriba in Thrilling Paul Ricard Duel

Werner D’Ansembourg converted pole position into a commanding Race 1 victory at Paul Ricard in his Brabham BT49, leading all 13 laps to secure a lights-to-flag win in the opening Masters Racing Legends encounter of the weekend.

Yutaka Toriba kept the pressure on throughout in the Williams FW07C and crossed the line just 1.245 seconds behind the Belgian after a race-long chase at the front. Dan Eagling completed the podium in the Fittipaldi F8B, while Mike Cantillon and Christophe D’Ansembourg rounded out the top five.

Further back, Valerio Leone claimed Lauda class honours in sixth overall aboard the Arrows A6, while Guillaume Roman took victory in the Fittipaldi class with his Ensign N175 after finishing 10th overall.

After starting from pole, Werner D’Ansembourg controlled proceedings from the outset, although Toriba remained within striking distance for much of the 25-minute race. Behind the leading duo, Eagling established himself in third, while Cantillon steadily worked his way forward in the Williams FW08.

Werner D’Ansembourg Denies Fabrice Lheritier to Seal Paul Ricard Double

Race 2 at Paul Ricard saw Fabrice Lheritier make the early running in his Tyrrell 009, leading the opening lap before Werner D’Ansembourg swept through in the Brabham BT49 and controlled the remainder of the contest to complete a weekend double in the Masters Racing Legends field.

Once into the lead, D’Ansembourg steadily pulled clear at the front as the chasing pack battled behind him around the fast and flowing Paul Ricard circuit. Lheritier’s strong getaway rewarded him with an early spell at the head of the field, but the Brabham’s pace soon proved decisive over the remainder of the 13-lap race.

The second race capped off a competitive weekend for the historic Formula One machinery, with close battles throughout the field across the Head, Lauda and Fittipaldi classes.
