Historic GP Zandvoort 2026: Masters Racing Legends for 66/85 F1 Cars

Werner d’Ansembourg delivered a commanding performance to win the opening Masters Racing Legends race at Zandvoort, leading home a competitive field of historic Formula One machinery after 17 laps aboard his Williams FW07C. The Belgian set the fastest lap of the race and crossed the line 15 seconds clear of Jamie Constable’s Tyrrell 011.

The race began with an early interruption when yellow flags were shown shortly after the start, before normal racing resumed. Yutaka Toriba’s Williams FW07C later stopped at Turn 11 and was forced to retire, while Mark Hazell’s Williams FW08C also failed to reach the finish after spinning and eventually dropping out with five laps remaining.

Once the race settled into rhythm, d’Ansembourg established himself at the front and consistently produced the fastest laps of the afternoon, eventually recording a best time of 1m33.764s. Constable remained his closest challenger throughout, but never quite had the pace to threaten the leader.

Behind the leading pair, Warren Briggs secured third overall in his McLaren M29 after an entertaining battle with Matthew Wrigley’s Tyrrell 011. Wrigley remained firmly in contention throughout the race but slipped behind Briggs in the closing stages after struggling to find a setup balance he was comfortable with.

Valerio Leone claimed victory in the Niki Lauda class and finished fifth overall in his Arrows A6, ahead of Simon Fish and Steve Hartley. Further back, John Spiers emerged victorious in the Emerson Fittipaldi class, while Ewen Sergison took honours in the Jackie Stewart class after a close race-long battle with Spiers that provided some of the most entertaining action in the midfield.

As the clock ticked down, the duel between Spiers and Sergison continued to captivate spectators, while d’Ansembourg remained untouchable at the front to secure a well-earned victory in the opening race of the weekend.

Werner d’Ansembourg completed a perfect weekend at Zandvoort by claiming his second Masters Racing Legends victory in as many races. The Belgian driver once again demonstrated impressive pace in his Williams FW07C, leading throughout the race and setting the fastest lap with a 1m34.864s effort.

Unlike the opening race, Race 2 ran entirely under green flag conditions, allowing the drivers to enjoy a full 17-lap sprint around the historic Dutch circuit without any safety interruptions. D’Ansembourg controlled the pace throughout and crossed the finish line 6.4 seconds ahead of Matthew Wrigley’s Tyrrell 011, who delivered a strong performance to secure second place overall.

Behind the leading pair, Warren Briggs continued his consistent weekend with another podium finish in the McLaren M29. Briggs claimed third overall and victory in the Niki Lauda Class after keeping clear of the chasing group led by Valerio Leone’s Arrows A6.

Yutaka Toriba recovered from his Race 1 retirement to finish fifth overall and third in the Patrick Head Class, while Simon Fish and Steve Hartley completed the top seven. Further back, John Spiers once again topped the Emerson Fittipaldi Class, with Ewen Sergison taking honours in the Jackie Stewart Class.

The race was largely defined by consistency rather than drama, with d’Ansembourg and Wrigley setting the benchmark pace throughout the afternoon. Both drivers lapped comfortably in the mid-1m35s, but the Williams driver always maintained a small advantage, gradually extending his lead to seal a convincing victory and complete a dominant Zandvoort sweep.
