RACE REPORT

Masters had a great weekend of racing at the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix!

The weather may have been a bit cooler than hoped for but the racing at the Circuit of the Americas didn't disappoint!  A 32-strong grid for Masters Endurance Legends USA wowed the crowds whilst Masters Historic Formula One USA gave a snapshot of Formula 1 past and present!

 


Constable clears rivals for COTA Masters Endurance Legends USA triumph

Jamie Constable claimed victory in the opening Masters Endurance Legends USA race of the weekend at the Circuit of the Americas on Saturday morning.

Constable, driving a Pescarolo LMP1 machine, edged clear of Lola B12/80 rival Craig Bennett through the opening stages of the 40-minute encounter, the gap ebbing and flowing around the eight-tenths mark.

Constable’s race threatened to be derailed when he and Bennett were caught out by the timing of a Safety Car deployment, caused by Dwight Merriman’s Nissan NPT90 coming to an untimely halt.

He and Bennett made their mandatory stops and dropped down the order, elevating Claude Malette’s Lola Toyota Rebellion into the net lead.

But Constable fought back at the restart and reeled in Malette, making the pass for the lead shortly before another Safety Car intervention, this time due to Gregory Thornton’s March 83G stopping on track.

Constable mastered the restart to streak clear of Malette to greet the chequered flag 9.2s ahead of his rival, while Malette resisted Bennett to finish as runner-up.

Grid 3/Proto leader Travis Engen claimed fourth overall aboard the Audi R8 LMP1 machine, while Grid 4/GT was claimed by Matthew Brabham, overhauling James Sofronas by 2.4s.

Tommy Dreelan and Aaron Scott co-piloted their Oreca FLM09 to seventh overall, with the G1/C1 division spearheaded by Cal Meeker in his Spice GTP.

Grid 2/Proto entry Mark Brannon was ninth overall while the top 10 was rounded out by the Riley Daytona Prototype entry of John McKenna and Ross Thompson.

The event, being held in support of Formula 1’s United States Grand Prix, will conclude with Sunday’s second race.

Constable doubles up with Race 2 MEL victory at COTA!

Jamie Constable (Pescarolo LMP1) made it back-to-back victories as he secured top honours in the second Masters Endurance Legends race of the weekend in support of the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas.

Constable, who claimed the win in Saturday’s first race – held in support of Formula 1’s United States Grand Prix – faced early pressure from Craig Bennett (Lola B12/80), falling two seconds behind at one stage.

But Constable quickly re-grouped and overhauled his rival before pulling clear, ensuring his Pescarolo LMP1 machine greeted the chequered flag first for the second time in two days.

Bennett’s prospects of another podium unravelled when he was forced out of the race with a broken axle, facilitating Saturday runner-up Claude Malette’s (Rebellion Lola Toyota) rise to another second place.

Constable and Lola Toyota Rebellion driver Malette were joined on the rostrum by Grid 3/Prototype class winner Travis Engen, who avoided trouble in his Audi R8 LMP1.

Oreca LMP 09 representatives Tommy Dreelan and Aaron Scott classified fourth overall, ahead of Grid 1/C1 class victor Cal Meeker, aboard a Spice GTP.

James Davison was second in class in Grid 3/Prototype, while Grid 2/Prototype was led by Mark Brannon in the Riley and Scott MK3C.

The lead GT car was Grid 4 representative Matthew Brabham as he finished comfortably clear of James Sofronas, replicating their respective positions from the opening race.

Cantillon dominates for Masters Historic Formula One USA win in Austin

Mike Cantillon controlled proceedings in the opening race of the Masters Historic Formula One USA weekend at the Circuit of the Americas.

Cantillon, behind the wheel of the 1981-spec Williams FW07C, cruised away from his opponents and swiftly built a lead during the 10-lap race on Saturday evening, held in support of Formula One’s United States Grand Prix.

It ensured Cantillon remained clear of a fierce battle for the runner-up spot between Jonathan Holtzman and Gregory Thornton in their respective Lotus machines.

The pair swapped positions on a number of occasions before Thornton took the initiative in his 91/5, edging the similarly-liveried 87B.

Christophe D’Ansembourg and Charles Nearburg had a scintillating scrap for fourth spot that was settled in favour of the Brabham BT49 driver over his Williams FW07C counterpart.

Jamie Constable recovered from a minor pre-race fire and pit lane start to secure sixth spot, in front of James Hagan, with both behind the wheel of a Tyrrell 011.

In the Fittipaldi category Ron Maydon’s LEC CRP1 remained clear of Cal Meeker’s Parnelli VPJ-4 for class victory, split by Head class interloper Warren Briggs.

Third in the Fittipaldi division went to Stephen Romak’s March 761.

The race finished behind the Safety Car owing to Tommy Dreelan’s Williams FW08 coming to a halt at Turn 14.

Cantillon triumphs again at Austin

Mike Cantillon capped the Masters Historic Formula One USA weekend at the Circuit of the Americas with his second victory, controlling the race from pole position.

Cantillon was never headed throughout the course of the 10-lap race on Sunday morning as he cantered to a comfortable victory behind the wheel of the 1981-spec Williams FW07C.

The identity of his nearest opponent changed a handful of times, however, as initially Gregory Thornton (Lotus 91/5)  and Charles Nearburg (Williams FW07) duelled over second position. A bold move into Turn 12 ensured Nearburg moved into second and he robustly kept his rival at bay through the next sequence of corners.

But Thornton soon dropped out of proceedings with a rear suspension failure and that cleared the way for Nearburg, only for his Williams FW07C to come to a halt through the Esses, prompting the deployment of the Safety Car.

Nearburg’s problems elevated Jamie Constable, sixth on Saturday, to secure the runner-up spot, though he couldn’t bring his Tyrrell 011 into victory contention after the restart, with Cantillon streaking clear.

American Lotus 87B driver Jonathan Holtzman joined Cantillon and Constable on the podium, while fourth was taken by James Hagan (Tyrrell 011B), as he edged Christophe D’Ansembourg’s Brabham BT49 by just three-tenths of a second at the line, with Warren Briggs (McLaren M29) sixth.

A closely-contested affair in the Fittipaldi category was fronted by Cal Meeker as he and main rival Ron Maydon in the LEC CRP1 fought for supremacy.

Meeker got ahead of his opponent and reached the chequered flag just a second clear, reversing their positions from Saturday’s race.

Stephen Romak (March 761) again finished third but was just seven-tenths down on Maydon at the conclusion of the 10-lap battle.
