Ferrer-aza takes first Masters USA win at Weather Tech Raceway Laguna Seca
Masters USA – Race 1
Matteo Ferrer-aza (Ligier JS11) and Timothy de Silva (Shadow DN3) swapped positions to finish one-two in this morning’s Masters USA race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Ferrer-aza’s pass of pole sitter de Silva around the outside in Turn 11 was the move of the race and a demonstration of car control and maturity from both drivers.
Charles Nearburg brought his Williams FW07B home in third after starting fifth. Ethan Shippert was fourth in the ’74 Brabham BT44 at the expense of Mike Cantillon (Tyrrell 010) and Steve Romak (Tyrrell 012) who both sipped back from their fourth and sixth starting positions. Cal Meeker brought his ’79 Tyrrell 009 home in seventh, with Martin Lauber’s March 741 eight. Jamie Constable started ninth in his ’77 Shadow DN8 and recovered from his off yesterday to finish ninth. Rounding out the top ten was Chris Farrell’s March 821.
The LEC CRP1 of Ron Maydon started and finished eleventh, followed by Bud Moeller who finished eleventh in his Ensign MN179. Gregory Thornton managed 8 laps in his Lotus 91 before gearbox issues forced his retirement, which were 6 more than Chris MacAllister who retired his Ferrari 312T2 on lap 2. Bill Cord and Dalmo de Vasconcelos both retired after 1 lap.
